NEBOSH Certificate in Environmental Management

Environmental standards are developing rapidly in the UK with more and more regulations covering issues such as waste management, energy efficiency and pollution control. Managing environmental issues is not only a legal necessity but can result in definite improvements and cost savings if implemented successfully.

More and more organisations are seeing the benefits and this course is designed to provide the theory and practical skills to assist the organisation in meeting these new and changing demands.

The course is highly interactive with many syndicate exercises and individual activities. In addition to the tutorial sessions, delegates are expected to carry out at least 20 hours of private study.

Many employers give responsibility for environmental management to the organisations safety advisor or manager. Holding the new Nebosh Environmental Certificate will provide the holder with the confidence to undertake their role as well as being an indicator of the competence, both inside and external to the organisation.

We were chosen by Nebosh to run the very first taught course leading to this new qualification in 2008. Since then we have run this course several times, both in-house for clients and open courses at our training centre with great success.

It is designed for safety practitioners and other managers who have involvement in environmental issues within the organisation. This is an NVQ level three qualification covering 9 different areas of environmental practice. The course assessment includes a two hour examination set by NEBOSH and a workplace environmental audit and report.

The Environment Certificate has been revised becoming joint international and national qualification its full name is now the ‘Certificate in Environment Management’. People who have this qualification can apply for Technician Membership of the Chartered Institution of Water & Environmental Management (TechCIWEM). Associate membership of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA) is also available to those are successful in this qualification. Although the course covers some of the UK specific legal requirements, it also covers the wider scope of international environmental issues.

The programme covers the control measures for major types of environmental risk. It incorporates the main elements of UK and EU legislation for environmental protection and general principles for the management of environmental risk, including:

  • Foundations in environmental management
  • Environmental management systems
  • Environmental impact assessments
  • Monitoring, reviewing and audit
