A Day in the Life of a Tutor

Today is a favourite of mine, presenting an in-house fire warden course, for those who know me, Fire Safety is a passion of mine.

I believe that in fire safety, no role is more underestimated than that of the Fire Warden, and you may be asking why I believe that to be so. My reasoning behind this is that I have found people think the role is just reactive; getting people out of the building safely in the event of a fire, and while this is true, it is very much a proactive role as well by helping prevent fires from starting.

Fire Wardens are such an important part of the workplace, helping the responsible person meet their legal duties. So, it’s fabulous to have another business choose us to deliver our bespoke training course.

First things first, to fire up the morning… coffee! Pack the car up with everything I need, my laptop, bespoke course handouts, quizzes, case study, everything written by Jackie Cambridge herself!

I already have everything I need from the client, the full address, their contact details for when I get to the site and even the parking arrangements. It’s really handy getting all this information a few weeks in advance, as it enables the day to get off to a great and smooth start.

I arrive on site with a lovely welcome from a previous delegate of ours. It’s always lovely to see delegates from past courses and to catch up on how they are doing.

A quick message from Jackie to check all is okay and set up, which helps the office know I’m okay. Once I get the room all set up, the delegates start arriving. It’s great to see so loads of new faces ready to start and I really enjoy getting to share my passion with them.

Now of course, we have PowerPoint slides to present but to make the session come alive we make it as interactive as possible. For today’s fire warden session I have a variety of quizzes and card sorting exercises.

Mid-morning, it’s time for delegates to take a quick break, check their phones and grab a coffee.

Then back to the course. We have more to cover to get everyone ready for the end assessment. On this course, we cover everything from the different classes of fire, different prevention and protection methods for fire safety, emergency procedures and evacuations.

Now it’s time for the end assessment and delegates to display what they’ve learnt from the course. Once everyone is finished it’s time for me to thank everyone and pack everything away.

As a tutor it’s a lovely feeling to see delegates smiling and talking fire safety as they leave.

Once everyone has left its time to pack the last few bits away, pack the car and head home. Of course after a day training it’s now time to reflect on the day and who better to talk about the day with than Barney who is always a great listener! (Beautiful Black Lab and a member of the Cambridge Safety building security team).
