In 2017 the brand new Nebosh Environmental Diploma was launched, there has been extensive consultation between Nebosh and organisations, individuals along with both national and international stakeholders to determine the content and format of its new environmental qualification. This will be a qualification for both UK employers and those companies who operate overseas.
This is one of the few professional courses available in environmental management, it is aimed primarily at safety practitioners who either have responsibility for environmental management or those whose role interlinks with that of the environmental manager.
Holders of this qualification may use the designatory letters EnvDipNEBOSH after their name. IOSH CPD participants may allocate CPD credits for attendance at this course.
Those holding the Nebosh National Diploma in Environmental Management can apply to be a non-chartered Member of CIWEM (MCIWEM) once they have achieved their qualification.
The Environmental Diploma provides a sound basis for progression to the MSc level: A number of UK universities offer MSc programs that accept the NEBOSH Diploma in Environmental Management as a full or partial entry requirement.
To complete the full Diploma qualification one assessed assignment and one written examination set by Nebosh must be passed successfully, within a five-year period. You will receive guidance on study techniques, project preparation and examination techniques.
Delegates are required to enrol with a training centre to study an accredited programme. All enrolment fees are included in the cost of your course.
The course consists of two units, ED1 which is the taught syllabus with a three hour written examination, and NDEM2 which is specific to UK legislation and is assessed via a work based project.
ED1 – Controlling Environmental Aspects
– Key environmental cycles and their effects
– Environmental leadership
– Environmental management systems and emergency planning
– Environmental risk evaluation and risk control
– Environmental performance evaluation
– Sustainability
– Solid Waste management
– Gaseous and particulate releases to air
– Liquid waste and water resource management
– Control of environmental noise
– Hazardous substances
– Energy use and efficiency
NDEM2 – Environmental Regulation
Enforcement of Environmental Legislation
Civil Liability
Pollution prevention and control legislation
The NDEM2 is a formal assignment set by Nebosh where candidates have to demonstrate their knowledge and practical application of some of the important subjects from Units ED1 and NDEM2. The assignment requires the completion of a 10,000+ word vocational based report which must show that the candidate has both the knowledge and skills to apply the issues taught in a workplace of their choice.
This assignment is marked by Nebosh markers with four submission dates a year in February, May, August and November for delegates to work towards.
This is one of the few professional courses available in environmental management, it is aimed primarily at health safety practitioners, who either have responsibility for environmental management or those whose role interlinks with that of the environmental manager. However it is open to all those who have responsibility for general or a specific aspect of the environment.
Many employers give responsibility for environmental management to the organisation’s safety advisor or manager. Holding the Nebosh diploma will provide the holder with the confidence to undertake their role, as well as being an indicator of the competence inside and external to the organisation.
