NEBOSH National Diploma For Occupational Health and Safety Professionals

Highly sought after by many organisations, the NEBOSH National Diploma in Health and Safety trains delegates to competently apply key legislation and health and safety practices to the work environment.

Since its introduction in 1980, it has become the most popular qualification of its kind with over 18,000 students having successfully gained the Diploma and is the first UK vocational qualification to be developed specifically for health and safety professionals. A brand new syllabus and format for this qualification was launched in 2021, with new style updated assessments as from July 2023.

The course provides an in-depth understanding of occupational health and safety. It covers a the additional management skills along with in-depth reviews of risk management techniques, human factors along with workplace health issues and key safety risks. These skills can be applied to a range of sectors including healthcare, construction and facilities management.

Our DN1 2024 classroom course achieved a 94% pass rate, exceeding the national pass rate!

Course Information

What does the course cover?

The updated 2023 version of the qualification consists of three units : DN1 Managing Health and Safety, DN2 Workplace Health Hazards, DN3 Workplace Safety.

  • DN1: Managing Health and Safety
    The qualification deliberately looks at general workplace issues so that it can be applied in many different sectors in which health and safety professionals may work. On completion of the qualification, your learners will be able to:

    • Understand how health and safety legislation is applied in a workplace and the possible enforcement actions that could be take for non-compliance and how they contribute to health and safety legislation.
    • Use different types of health and safety leadership approaches and be able to influence health and safety issues at all levels.
    • Influence organisational health and safety workplace culture.
    • Proactively manage health and safety, taking account of human failures and factors.
    • Manage health and safety competence (both their own and that of the organisation).
    • Use a range of hazard identification, risk management and loss causation techniques.
    • Monitor health and safety performance.
    • Develop their role as a health and safety professional including understanding how it links with Corporate Social Responsibility.
    • Effectively manage organisational change.
    • Manage contractors and supply chains
  • Assessed via one workplace assignment which will need approximately 40 hours of work to complete over a 4 week period.
  • DN2 – Workplace Health and Wellbeing
    Delegates will be able to control a range of workplace health and well-being issues. Including

    • Substances & Chemicals – Risk Assessment
    • Substances & Chemicals – Engineering Controls & PPE
    • Monitoring & Measuring hazardous agents
    • Biological Agents
    • Noise & Vibration
    • Radiation
    • Psychosocial Agents including mental ill health
    • Musculoskeletal Risks & Controls
    • Work Environment Risks & Controls
  • This unit is assessed by a workplace case study which is undertaken over a 2 week period and will require up to 20 hours of work outside of tutorials.
  • DN3 Workplace Safety
    Delegates will be able to control a range of workplace safety issues, including:

    • Fire
    • Explosions
    • Confined spaces
    • Storage, Handling & Processing of Dangerous Subs
    • Work Equipment & Workplace Machinery
    • Lifting equipment
    • Electrical Safety & Electricity at Work Regulations 1989
    • Construction Hazards & Controls
    • Workplace Transport & Driving for Work
  • This unit is assessed by a workplace case study which is undertaken over a 2 week period and will require up to 20 hours of work outside of tutorials.

Who is the course suitable for?

Health and safety practitioners, advisers and officers who wish to develop their knowledge and skills. It is also suitable for those whose roles involve Health and Safety as an integral part of their job/profession and for those with overall responsibilities for Health and Safety within any multifaceted business e.g:

  • Estates and Facilities Management
  • Construction
  • Healthcare

The Diploma is a level 6 course and requires delegates to have the underpinning formal knowledge of health and safety before commencing study, delegates must have either completed the Nebosh Certificate or a similar level three H&S qualification to be eligible for this programme.  If you have not studied with Cambridge Safety previously you will be required to show evidence of your level 3 qualification.

Successful completion of this programme can enable delegates to progress to Chartered Membership of IOSH (CMIOSH) and full membership of the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (MIIRSM). In addition, you can also choose to enrol with the Occupational Safety and Health Consultants Register (OSHCR).

Delegates are required to enrol with a training centre to study this accredited programme.

How long does the NEBOSH Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety take to complete?

NEBOSH recommends a minimum of 191 taught hours and approximately 144 hours of private study to successfully complete the study, with an additional 140 hours to complete the course assessments. You will need to complete the course within five years of your enrolment.

Is the NEBOSH National Diploma For Health and Safety Professionals suitable for beginners?

No, delegates must have already completed the Nebosh General Certificate or an equivalent NVQ level three course as you are expected to have the underpinning knowledge to study for the Diploma.

Can I complete the NEBOSH Diploma in Health and Safety Online?

We currently do not offer this course online. However, we do offer distance learning options and classroom based sessions.
