The NEBOSH Fire Safety Certificate focuses on Fire Safety and is a stand alone qualification at Certificate level.
The syllabus has two assessments, an Open Book Exam accessed online at home, and a Fire Risk Assessment practical. Delegates have 5 years to pass both units.
Holders of the NEBOSH Fire Safety Certificate can help their organisation manage and avoid the risk of fire while also meeting the essential fire safety regulations. Fire safety is important – it not only protects people from injury and loss of life, it also helps protect property, assets and investments.
This NEBOSH qualification is perfect for those who have the responsibility of fire safety in the workplace, health and safety managers, fire marshals and employees in suitable industries. The course is broad and builds an understanding of how to manage and coordinate fire risk assessments.

Who is the course suitable for?
The NEBOSH Fire Safety Certificate qualification is designed for people who have fire safety responsibilities in the workplace. It provides the knowledge and understanding, when combined with relevant experience, to carry out an effective fire risk assessment, as well as embed good fire safety practices in the workplace.
The qualification focuses on fire safety but also explores the risks of explosions, which may be relevant where organisations have quantities of dust, powder, flammable gases or vapours.
Holders of this accredited qualification help their organisation to ensure it meets its fire safety responsibilities.
What does the course cover?
The course consists of 6 elements :
FSC Fire Safety
- Managing fire safety
- Principles of fire and explosion
- Fuel, oxygen and ignition sources and control measures
- Fire protection in buildings
- Safety of people in the event of fire
- Fire safety risk assessment including risk assessments of dangerous substances
NEBOSH FIRE Certificate Assessment Overview
The course is centred around two key assessments that evaluate the candidate’s understanding and application of fire safety principles.
- FSC1: This is an open-book examination, accessed online over 24 hours that takes approximately 5 hours, but allow the full day so you can take regular breaks. This assessment tests the candidate’s theoretical knowledge, ensuring they have a solid grasp of fire safety regulations, hazard identification, and risk mitigation strategies.
- FSC2: This one is a practical fire risk assessment that candidates must carry out in their own workplace. For this assessment, you are required to use established frameworks and standards, such as the Home Office fire guidance and PAS79-1:2020, to thoroughly evaluate the fire risks present in their work environment.
By successfully completing both the FSC1 and FSC2 assessments, you can be confident in their ability to identify, assess, and mitigate fire risks, ultimately contributing to a safer and more secure work environment.
